How Many Times to Fertilize Lawn or Spray for Weeds, Grubs, Fungus, etc.

It’s not uncommon for homeowners to ask us how many lawn treatments they need each year. Whether it’s how many times to fertilize the lawn, how many times to spray for weeds, or something else—homeowners want to feel confident that they’re not receiving too few (or too many) treatments.

Of course, with so many lawn care companies packaging their programs in different ways, it can be easy to understand the confusion.

We’re here to be your guides in lawn care advice, which is why we’ve put together this article that will hopefully answer some of your common lawn care questions. When you are investing in professional services, you deserve to know that your lawn is getting what it needs.

How Many Lawn Care Visits Do I Need?

It’s common to want to ask how many visits you need but in reality, what you really need to be looking at is what treatments your lawn needs.

That’s quite different as multiple treatments can be combined into one visit. You want to be paying attention to what specifically will be performed on your lawn throughout the year.

For instance, a 7-visit program could have anywhere from 7-11 treatments from one company to another. Don’t get hung up on the number of visits. What’s included?!

At Master Lawn, we know that every lawn is different. Customer expectations are different, too. That’s why we have three lawn care programs that aim to meet all of our clients’ needs.

  • Our Silver Program includes 7 lawn care visits and will cover the most common issues your lawn faces.
  • Our Gold Program (our most popular option) includes 9 lawn care visits and adds 2 turf disease control treatments to the offerings.
  • Our Platinum Program includes 10 lawn care visits with an added visit for core aeration. This is also our hybrid approach that uses organic, bio-nutritional probiotic soil additives.

Each of these programs includes strategically timed visits throughout the season that are designed to ensure that your lawn is receiving what it needs when it needs it. We’ll break that down a bit further for you so that you can understand what you receive for your investment.

Since our Gold Program is our most popular program, we’ll use that as our example.

How Many Times to Fertilize a Lawn?

Ongoing fertilization begins in the early spring. While it’s easy to get caught up in the number of lawn fertilization visits, the truth is, it’s all relative. You could deliver a lot of nutrients in a handful of visits or fertilize over a longer period of time. It’s important to remember that it has more to do with the rate of application and the products being used than it does the number of visits.

However, we still want to be clear on what Master Lawn does. In our Gold Program, visits 2, 3, 4, and 5 all have fertilizer included.

How Many Times to Spray for Weeds?

Good weed control is all about optimally timed treatments that are varied as the season and property need them to be. For instance, in the early spring, we are applying perfectly timed pre-emergent applications that will prevent weed growth in the first place. The timing is crucial as pre-emergents work by inhibiting germination (so applying it after weeds have germinated is not going to be effective).

Following pre-emergents, we are hitting weeds with post-emergent throughout the rest of the year. Most likely this could be all 9 visits. Basically, if we see weeds when we are on-site, we’re going to treat. And since different weeds occur at different times of the year, this is truly an ongoing problem that needs to be continually addressed with a customized approach that takes into account the specifics of your property. After all, the weeds that you are dealing with may be different from some of the weeds our other customers are seeing. That is why our approach is varied.

How Many Times to Spray Lawn Fungus?

In Tennessee and Mississippi, there are 3 lawn diseases that we see most often. All 3 of these lawn diseases (as well as many others) are fast-moving and require swift action. For that reason, lawn fungus prevention is the best approach. Our Gold Program includes 2 preventive lawn fungus sprays built-in.

How Many Times to Apply Limestone?

Applying limestone to your lawn corrects the pH balance in the soil by neutralizing its acidity and alkalinity. In our Gold Program, we include one limestone application, which is all that your lawn needs to get these benefits.

How Many Times to Spray for Lawn Grubs?

Lawn grubs are the larvae of beetles that lay their eggs in the summer and begin feeding on lawn roots around mid-August. It is best to prevent lawn grubs in the first place by applying a product that will prevent grubs from hatching.

The timing of a preventative product is essential. Preventative grub control is an add-on service for us and something that we apply in the early springtime if the customer has concerns or if they have had a grub problem in the past.

Making Sure Your Lawn Has What it Needs to Thrive

As you come to understand what lawn care services are important throughout the year, you’re probably also realizing that questions about how many visits are less important than questions about what your lawn is receiving during visits (and whether those treatments are optimally timed).

Of course, you don’t want to feel as though you need an agronomics degree just to make sure your lawn is getting what it needs—nor do you want to feel as though you have to babysit your lawn care company and check in on what they’re doing.

What you really want is a company that’s going to perform the proper lawn treatments when they’re needed so that you don’t have to worry.

At Master Lawn, that’s the peace of mind we can deliver.

Instead of having to spend any time worrying about whether treatments are getting done on the timeline they’re supposed to, you can put your trust in us knowing that we’ve got you covered. After all, when it comes to the healthy and thriving lawn that you desire, your wish is our command.
